The basics of what you need to know when hiring Drone pilots

In the past couple of years alone, drones have become a trendy technological gadget that has opened up a world of opportunities for many industries, including photography and real estate. The ability to capture 4K aerial photos and videos seamlessly of a property and its surrounding location has been deemed an asset for selling properties efficiently. That being said, many real estate agents and homeowners are unaware of the technicalities and regulations a photographer must abide by in order to provide drone real estate photography services for their clients. Therefore, today we are going to be outlining what it takes to become a certified drone operator.


To operate a drone in the state of Denver, you must hold a Remote Pilot Airman Certificate (Part 107) to fly commercially that requires the following:

· You to pass an aeronautical knowledge-based test

· Be at least 16 years of age

· Be vetted by the Transportation Security Administration

Once you have obtained accreditation to operate a drone legally, you must update your certification every two years. The Denver Airport is a CLASS B type and requires additional authorizations to function drones lawfully inside a specific radius. You are also required to hold insurance which is almost equivalent to paying the cost of car insurance.

Preparing For Flight

Now, in a perfect world, you would be able to fly a drone seamlessly without any preparation. However, as it is considered a form of commercial air flight, there are multiple steps a drone operator must do before flying that is required under the law:

· An accurate assessment of the local weather conditions

· Assessment of all local airspace and flight restrictions

· Assessment of the property for potential hazards

The drone operator must also ensure that all people who are participating in the drone flight operation, regardless of if it is drone real estate photography, understands the following:

· Emergency and contingency procedures

· Operating conditions

· Potential hazards

· Responsibilities of being involved in an operation that consists of the use of drones

Temporary Flight Restrictions

As briefly mentioned above, before operating any drone for real estate photography, the photographer must accurately assess temporary flight restrictions. For those of you who are unaware, these restrictions are utilized by the Federal Aviation Administration to restrict aircraft operations within designated areas at a moment's notice as well as protect aircraft away from hazards that may put flight safety in danger, such as fires, wind storms, and blizzards. Thus, photographers must understand and remain compliant with aviation regulations at all times.

Additionally, it is also therefore crucial for homeowners and real estate agents to ensure they have prepped in advance for the photographer to come onto the property to shoot seamlessly as conditions could potentially change without prior notice. This shows how technical and skilled photographers need to be to provide such a service to the real estate industry.
